Calling all mad scientists! STEINS;GATE 0, the long-awaited sequel to STEINS;GATE, is coming out this spring, and the series has launched an official website to start the countdown.
For those unaware, STEINS;GATE is a sci-fi anime that follows self-proclaimed mad scientist Rintarō Okabe and his friends. What starts as some innocent exploration of time travel theory and sending texts through microwaves turns into a convoluted adventure featuring an evil organization from the future, the rising probability of World War III, and a whole lot of time shenanigans.
Adapted from a visual novel of the same name, STEINS;GATE quickly rocketed in popularity, spawning several extra episodes and spin-offs. One such spin-off is STEINS;GATE 0, a visual novel that acts as the sequel to the original game. And lucky for us anime fans, a TV anime adaptation of it will air this April!
Exploring the STEINS;GATE 0 Site
The announcement of STEINS;GATE 0’s anime first came out in the form of a promotional video in December. Watch the YouTube video below:
This same video plays on the official website before users can access the rest of the site. Additionally, the website also lists recent news, the staff and cast, and, best of all, character profiles featuring brand-new designs.
All the main characters from the original series are present, with the original voice cast reprising their roles. To add to the fun, some new characters are here for the ride, as well. While three of their profiles are available for viewing, five others are grayed out. Interestingly, one of them was actually a notable character in the original show — perhaps her grayed out profile is a hint to a bigger role here.
Finally, the site also features the show’s very first key visual front and center.
Everyone sure looks sharp! In particular, I love those colors and the recurring gear imagery from the original show.
Keen-eyed fans will note, however, that the visual is missing two very prominent characters. Namely, the original series’ main heroine Kurisu Makise, and one of the sequel game’s protagonists Suzuha Amane. These are two of the most beloved characters of the franchise, so to leave them out of the show’s first key visual is a telling move. We can only wonder and anticipate what it means for STEINS;GATE 0.
A Sequel to Anticipate
Anime sequels can be a hit-or-miss, especially when the original is as widely-renowned as STEINS;GATE. It’s also worth noting that while the game version of STEINS;GATE 0 features multiple different routes, the anime will reconstruct the story into a single one. This could spell trouble, due to how difficult it is in general to condense full stories in a satisfying way. But honestly, I have faith in STEINS;GATE 0 regardless. The promotional video looks promising, and the staff list guarantees the return of the original show’s writer, who did an excellent job given a complicated adaptation.
STEINS;GATE 0 is set to air in April, although an exact date has yet to be announced. For now, all we can do is check up on that nifty website for more information, and for those remaining profiles to be revealed. Oh, and tinker around with some time-traveling microwaves, of course.
