It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And no, I don’t mean Christmas (though, that’s second on the list). Jump Festa 2018 has arrived and it’s brought us many things to look forward to in the new year. If you’re unfamiliar, Jump Festa is an expo that takes place in Japan every December. It brings lovers of shonen anime and manga a whole slew of news and announcements about all their favorite series—and of course, video games included, too!
Now in its 16th year, Jump Festa has delivered! From old favorites like ONE PIECE to newer ones like BLACK CLOVER, there’s no lack of coverage. Here are some of the best announcements out of Jump Festa 2018!
TOKYO GHOUL is back with TOKYO GHOUL:RE! The show takes place two years after the events of the original story and follows Haise Sasaki, a Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG) investigator tasked with leading a group of half-ghouls known as the Quinx Squad. These half-ghouls, unlike TOKYO GHOUL’s main character Ken Kaneki, were originally humans who volunteered to have the ghoul organ known as a kakuho implanted into their body. The Quinx Squad was created purely for experimental reasons, causing them to be highly controlled by the CCG. And since they were all volunteers, Haise isn’t working with the strongest investigators, which makes his job much harder. If trying to turn a ragtag group into heroes wasn’t hard enough, the Quinx Squad also faces discrimination from fellow investigators.
Studio Pierrot returns for this new season. Odahiro Watanabe (GUREN LAGANN, PERSONA 4: THE ANIMATION) will be the director of TOKYO GHOUL:RE with Atsuko Nakajima (JOKER GAME, PSYCHO-PASS) as the character designer. Natsuki Hanae (ACE OF DIAMOND) returns to the TOKYO GHOUL world as Haise Sasaki. Joining him is Kaito Ishikawa (HAIKYUU) as Kuke Urie, Yuma Ushida (MACROSS) as Ginshi Shirazu, Natsumi Fujiwara (SHONEN MAID) as Tooru Mutsuki, and Ayane Sakura (WELCOME TO THE BALLROOM) as Saiko Yonebayashi.
TOKYO GHOUL:RE premieres this April! Check out the trailer below:
ONE PIECE: WORLD SEEKER
ONE PIECE + open world gameplay = new video game?!
That’s right! ONE PIECE is back in an all-new video game thanks to Bandai Namco and Shueisha. Coming in 2018, ONE PIECE: WORLD SEEKER features everyone’s favorite Straw Hat, Luffy. A trailer was released at Jump Festa 2018. Although, it focuses more on the game’s visuals than the actual plot. Check out the video below:
ONE PIECE is no stranger to the world of video games. With over 50 games under their belt, WORLD SEEKER isn’t the first open world game, but it’s definitely the most special! “2017 marks the 20th anniversary of ONE PIECE, one of the world’s most popular manga and anime series which has riveted millions of fans since it started. We’re proud to help usher in a new era with ONE PIECE: WORLD SEEKER, an ambitious new entry in the legendary series,” said Randy Le, Brand Manager at Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc. “With an expansive open world and story, Luffy will travel through a huge variety of locales in a new adventure that’s as vast as the seven seas.”
The game will release sometime in 2018 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. And if that weren’t enough, two more games were announced earlier this year for 2018. Fans are also getting ONE PIECE: GRAND CRUISE on PS4 VR and ONE PIECE: BOUNTY RUSH on iOS and Android! You can check out their trailers here and here.
FOOD WARS Season 4
FOOD WARS: THE THIRD PLATE is ending soon. As the shortest season yet, fans are certainly dismayed. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait much longer for the next season. The latest season was confirmed at Jump Festa 2018 along with a trailer. Check it out now:
While we started season three relatively calm (by FOOD WARS standards at least), Erina Nakiri’s father’s appearance has made everything go haywire. Remember when our biggest worry was whether or not Soma could sell enough black pepper buns? Yeah, those were the good times. Between Central’s new mandate and Azami Nakiri’s sheer craziness, tensions are at an all-time high at Totsuki Academy. There’s only one more episode left this season and things are not looking good. The new teaser doesn’t help much, either, as its filled with intense music and determined looks on characters’ faces. The events of season three are expected to continue on into the fourth. Though, according to Inquisitr, the fourth season is most likely going to mainly cover the Promotion Exams story arc.
Thankfully, the fourth plate will be served soon! We’ll only have to wait with rumbling tummies until April 2018!
Masashi Kishimoto to Create New Series
NARUTO may be over, but its creator, Masashi Kishimoto, is as busy as ever! In honor of Weekly Shonen Jump’s 50th Anniversary, Kishimoto announced that he is creating a new series during the BORUTO: THE NEXT GENERATION panel at Jump Festa 2018. Attendees were also treated to a sneak peak of the manga!
The manga’s plot is still unknown. But, based on the image above, we know it’ll be as action-packed as NARUTO. It also probably won’t be NARUTO related at all. As stated by Comicbook.com, Kishimoto is looking to explore stories outside of his most popular franchise. But if NARUTO is any indicator, this new manga will probably be just as incredible, just as successful, and just as long (just kidding, we don’t know that!)
MY HERO ACADEMIA Season 3
It seems like ages since MY HERO ACADEMIA Season 2 ended. The last time we saw our favorite heroes, they were shopping for the annual school trip. Then, villain Shigaraki crashed the party and left Midoriya visibly shaken. On top of that, The League of Villains is getting some new recruits?! Season 3 can’t come fast enough!
The first trailer dropped at Jump Festa 2018! Check it out below:
It’s a short video, but from what we can tell, the League of Villains has no plans to back down. Season 3 will mainly follow Class 1-A into U.A.’s hidden training camp. As they try to hone their quirks, Shigaraki and his cronies have other plans and our favorite heroes-in-training must fight to survive. This season introduces new heroes and villains alike, such as The Pussycats, Dabi, and Himiko Toga.
MY HERO ACADEMIA will be back April 2018.
The New DRAGON BALL Film
Thought this list couldn’t get any better? Wrong! DRAGON BALL is getting its 20th film! That’s right, its 20th! Toei Animation confirmed the film at Jump Festa 2018 and, so far, we know that Akira Toriyama will be handling character designs and scripts. If you’re unfamiliar with the name, Akira Toriyama is the man who started it all! DRAGON BALL’s creator!
This is the first time that Toriyama will be scripting for DRAGON BALL. In previous films and series, he’s assisted with character designs and voice acting, but that seems to be the extent of it. A few key cards were also released, hinting at the film’s plot. Check them out below:
According to Comicbook.com, the tweet roughly translates to, “The story is already finished/Historical number of characters/The keyword is Saiyan.” If this translation is accurate, fans can expect to learn more about the Saiyan race beyond favorites like Goku and Vegeta.
The film will release sometime in December 2018.
New YU YU HAKUSHO OVA
It’s been 25 years since YU YU HAKUSHO graced our screens, but the series has been out for much longer. Yoshihiro Togashi first started the series way back in 1990! In honor of the series’ silver anniversary, Studio Pierrot is releasing an all new, never-before-seen OVA (Original Video Animation) as a bonus feature on the YU YU HAKUSHO 25th Anniversary Blu-ray box set.
YU YU HAKUSHO was one of the most popular shonen anime series in the 90s, so it’s no surprises that the studio would do something to honor its 25th birthday.Unfortunately, we don’t know anything else about it. Studio Pierrot made the announcement via a banner at their Jump Festa 2018 booth, which you can check out here.
Overall, this new OVA is going to be a huge nostalgia trip! We can’t wait for it to come out in 2018!
MY HERO ACADEMIA: THE MOVIE Key Visual
You might have thought that MY HERO ACADEMIA was a one-and-done kind of deal on this list, but think again! Not only is the show back for a third season in 2018, but it’s also getting its own movie! Weekly Shonen Jump announced the film earlier this month. We got our first look at Jump Festa 2018.
The film will feature an original story not sourced from the manga. The series’ creator, Kohei Horikoshi, commented on the matter, saying, “Deku and his friends make their surprising debut on the silver screen! At the time I was told there was going to be a movie, I could scarcely believe it, but when it was clear that is was going to happen, I was super happy.”
According to Horikoshi, the movie will definitely be featuring the Class 1-A heroes-in-training. A closer look into the key visual, however, reveals someone who is not like the others. Who is that blonde heroine (if she even is a heroine!) and what’s she doing with our favorite heroes? I guess we’ll have to wait till next summer to find out!
DISSIDIA FINAL FANTASY NT
Need more heroes versus villains? Square Enix is delivering DISSIDIA FINAL FANTASY NT to ring in the new year. And, to top it off, you won’t have to wait much longer! The game releases January 30, 2018, exclusively on the PS4!
According to Comicbook.com, the game features both heroes and villains from throughout the FINAL FANTASY franchises. Additionally, players will be decking it out to either “save or destroy” the world. Jump Festa 2018 also confirmed a beta testing period in just a few weeks time, but it will only be available to Japanese players. DISSIDIA FINAL FANTASY NT also introduces a new gaming mode called “Core Battle Mode.” Under this mode, teams made up of two players fight to take down the opposing team’s core, allowing for more competitive gameplay.
It’s easier to show you then tell you. Check out “Core Battle Mode” in action below:
BLACK CLOVER: QUARTET KNIGHTS
BLACK CLOVER has been taking the anime world by storm this season. Based on the fantasy manga created by Yuki Tabata, it follows the story of Asta, a powerless boy who lives in a world where nearly everyone has some sort of magic ability. The anime aired a few months ago and fans can’t get enough of it!
A new game was announced earlier this year and we got our first look at Jump Festa 2018. From what we see in the trailer above, BLACK CLOVER: QUARTET KNIGHT offers a variety of modes such as third-person shooter, and four versus four. Though, the main goal is still to become the “Ultimate Knight.” According to Gamereactor, “… [QUARTET KNIGHTS] you can form your own Magic Knights Squad to challenge others in co-op battles with friends, mixing shooting and magic together. Attack, defense, and support specializations are also available, so choosing your squad is important.”
BLACK CLOVER: QUARTER KNIGHT will be out sometime next year for PS4 and PC.
Thank you, Jump Festa 2018!
These announcements from Jump Festa 2018 have us squirming in our seats. April seems to be the month to look out for most of these announcements, but don’t let that distract you from everything else! 2018 can’t come soon enough because it’s sure to be jam-packed full of awesomeness!
What are you looking forward to the most? Let us know in the comments!
